Yu Wang

President

Yu Wang serves as President of the International Center for Relativistic Astrophysics (ICRA), he is a professor at the International Center for Relativistic Astrophysics Network (ICRANet) and also holds a research position at the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). He oversees administrative activities including international collaborations, doctoral programs, conferences, and awards. He leads the data analysis team focusing on high-energy X-ray and gamma-ray observations from missions such as Swift, NuSTAR, and Fermi, as well as optical data analysis.

His theoretical research centers on high-energy astrophysics and cosmology. Based on experience in data analysis, theoretical modeling, and computer programming, his current research focuses on artificial intelligence in astrophysics, including neural networks and large language models applied to active galactic nuclei, cosmology, gamma-ray bursts, gravitational waves and etc. Unlike traditional approaches based on proposing theories or summarizing observations, artificial intelligence integrates large volumes of multi-wavelength data to identify underlying physical principles.

Message

ICRA has a history of more than forty years, founded during the early development of relativistic astrophysics. Over the decades, it has maintained rigorous scientific standards while continuously embracing new ideas and technologies. Today, astronomy is entering an era of unprecedented data volume from telescopes and satellites, and Artificial Intelligence is becoming a key approach for transforming these large-scale observations into physical understanding.

Building on ICRA's long-standing scientific tradition, ICRA sets a clear scientific objective for Artificial Intelligence. AI is not treated only as an assistant tool, it is exposed directly to real observational data so that it can see, understand, and explore the Universe. With a defined roadmap and quantitative results, this effort shows that AI can operate reliably within real research workflows. From ICRA's perspective, the combination of AI's ability to process data at scale and its emerging potential to support theory building marks the start of a new phase of scientific research, moving us toward a more connected and integrated understanding of nature.

ICRA has always supported international scientific exchange. In a world that is becoming increasingly divided, this mission may face greater challenges, but it also carries greater responsibility. We hope ICRA will continue to serve as a bridge through science, extending the open and friendly spirit of this community beyond academia, and contributing in a practical and positive way to society.
