The Joint International Relativistic Astrophysics PhD Programme (JIRA PhD) is an international joint doctoral initiative established through a formal cooperation agreement between University of Ferrara and University of Science and Technology of China. The program operates with the scientific collaboration of ICRA and ICRANet and represents a dedicated bilateral framework for doctoral training in relativistic astrophysics.

The JIRA PhD Programme is designed to provide an integrated research and training path between the two partner institutions. Doctoral candidates are enrolled in the Physics PhD program of the University of Ferrara and carry out their research activities under joint supervision by faculty members from both institutions. The joint supervisory structure ensures continuous coordination of the research project and alignment with the academic requirements of both partners.

The scientific scope of the JIRA PhD Programme includes relativistic astrophysics, high-energy astrophysics, black hole physics, and cosmology. Doctoral research is conducted within established research groups and is complemented by advanced coursework and seminars relevant to the student’s research topic. The standard duration of the program is three years, in accordance with the doctoral regulations of the University of Ferrara.

International mobility is a mandatory element of the JIRA PhD Programme. Doctoral candidates are required to spend a substantial period of their doctoral training at the partner institution, typically not less than one academic year. During this period, students participate fully in the research and academic life of the host institution, including seminars, courses, and collaborative research activities.
