Third William Fairbank Meeting

Held with the First ICRANet Workshop, the third meeting focused on the Lense-Thirring effect around the Earth, neutron stars, and black holes.

Meeting Overview

The First ICRANet Workshop and the Third William Fairbank Meeting were devoted to the Lense-Thirring effect: the coupling between the rotation of a mass and the orbital motion of bodies around it, as predicted by general relativity.

The meeting connected theoretical understanding, experimental verification, and observational evidence around the Earth, neutron stars, and black holes. It reviewed gravitomagnetism, spin-orbital angular momentum coupling, noninertial forces, spinning test bodies, and the interpretation of possible measurements.

The program took place between Rome and Pescara, with sessions at ICRA, the University of Rome "La Sapienza", and the ICRA Network in Pescara. It included the status of the Stanford Gravity Probe B mission, LAGEOS satellite measurements, compact-object signatures, and assessments of error analysis.
