Italy-Korea Symposium
The Italian-Korean Symposium on Relativistic Astrophysics is a long-running bilateral meeting series connecting scientists and young researchers in Italy and Korea.

A Bilateral Scientific Tradition Since 1987
The series of Italian-Korean Symposia on Relativistic Astrophysics began in 1987, before the Astrophysics Division of the Korean Physical Society was established in 1995. From the beginning, the symposia brought together young researchers and senior scientists from both countries, helping form a durable framework for exchange in relativistic astrophysics.
The first symposium was organized by Hanyang University and held at Hanyang University and Sorak Mountain from September 3 to 8, 1987. It included a formal inauguration by Hanyang University and the Italian Embassy, with Korean and international participants joining a program whose proceedings were later published by World Scientific.
The second symposium was held in Italy, at the University of Rome and Limone Piemonte, from July 8 to 13, 1989. That alternation between Korea and Italy became a defining feature of the series, combining scientific collaboration with cultural exchange.
Topics And Support
The traditional subjects of the series are theoretical and relativistic astrophysics, including gamma-ray bursts, compact stars, high-energy cosmic rays, dark energy and dark matter, general relativity, black holes, and cosmology.
The historical series was supported by Korean and Italian institutions, including KOSEF, ICRANet, CNR, and hosting universities and research centers. Its purpose has been to accelerate exchange between scientists of Italy and Korea, with particular attention to young researchers.
Recent editions have continued this role. IK18 was held at ICRANet in Pescara in June 2023, while IK19 was held at the Center for Relativistic Laser Science in Gwangju, Korea, in November 2025.
