Work

The initial data problem in relativity determines what gravitational configurations can consistently evolve under Einstein's equations.

York developed the conformal decomposition and related methods for constructing valid initial data for Einstein's equations.

These tools became foundational for numerical simulations of black holes, neutron stars, and gravitational waves.
