Advanced Series in Astrophysics and Cosmology Series Editors: Fang Li Zhi and Remo Ruffini Volume XXX Fermi and Astrophysics Proceedings of IX ICRA Network workshop Edited by V.G.Gurzadyan and R.Ruffini Many events were organized all over the world in celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Enrico Fermi, covering the activities of Fermi in particle physics, nuclear physics, statistical mechanics, and quantum statistics. A special event was organized at the University of Rome and in the ICRA Center in Pescara October 3-6, 2001. The focus was on the influence of Fermi on Astrophysics and General Relativity which today have acquired special scientific meaning due to the fast developments in the field of Relativistic Astrophysics. Paradoxically the major activities of Fermi on these topics were clustered at the beguinning and at the end of his scientific career. The meeting was conceived with a novel format. In each session a selected paper of Fermi was discussed in terms of both its historical context and later developments related to it. These papers and their commentaries are included in the proceedings. This presentation was then followed by an in depth analysis of recent developments by active scientists working in each field, also contained in the proceedings. In some cases contributions from young researchers about recent Ph.D. theses relevant to the topic at hand concluded each session. Topical sessions were held on: Fermi and General Relativity Thomas-Fermi equation and white dwarfs The bomb and gamma ray bursts Cosmic rays From Magnetohydrodynamics to Magnetars Neutrinos in stellar evolution and cosmology Stochastic processes, Fermi-Pasta-Ulam model The proceedings also include the addresses of the president of SIF (Italian Physical Society), and the president of Italian Committee for the Celebration of the Hundredth Anniversary of Fermi's Birth, as well as of the editors of this volume. Readership: Graduate students and researchers in physics, mathematics and astrophysics. Sessions and speakers: Cosmology The paper by E. Fermi and A.Turkevich on cosmological nucleosynthesis ...
