Black Holes, Gravitational Waves and Cosmology a meeting in celebration of the 60th birthday of Remo Ruffini on the 30th anniversary of the book of this title by Martin Rees, Remo Ruffini and John Archibald Wheeler July 15 - 20, 2002 Rome/Pescara, Italy http://www.icra.it/ICRA_Networkshops/INW10_RJR60 rjr60@icra.it These three topics characterize the three main areas in which Remo has worked with a long list of collaborators both before and since that book was published. The meeting will review these areas and work done in them over the past three decades. For many of us who began our research as students working with Remo, he has had an important influence on the direction of our careers. We members of the organizing committees especially look forward to this occasion to meet again with the many friends our association with Remo has led to over the years. As more details of the meeting became available, they will be added to this site. INW 10 RJR July 15-20, 2002 Parole in occasione dei sessant'anni di Remo Ruffini, e dei seminari tenutosi in Roma e Pescara. To day we have a nice occasion to measure our progress in Astrophysics in these last thirsty years. We can compare the book by Martin Rees Remo Ruffini and J. Archibald Wheeler: Black Holes, Gravitational Waves and Cosmology, edited in 1973 with what we know and search to day in Astrophysics and in elementary particle physics. The progress in astrophysics is huge, still on lines of thought that do not contradict those opened in this book, with the discussion on the beginning, the end, the energy and the entropy of our Universe, unique or not. But during this week you will have occasion to speculate on this progress, with original ideas who are beyond my capacity. I have devoted my life to study elementary particle physics in the laboratories established on Earth. Let me make a short comment on the progress in the relations between astrophysics and elementary particle physics. These relations are so strict and inter dependent, that we must think of them as a unique science with a variety of very different experimental approaches and detectors on Earth and in space, but with a common theoretical landscape. Looking to the elementary structure of the world, we must ask how complexity arises in the Universe. We who work on the fundamental principles, mostly believe, as I do, that the basic theories are extremely simple. There are two of them. The first is a unified theory of the elementary particles and all the forces of nature. It could even be that we already have that theory [I am copying from Gell-Mann (Plectics, Europhysics news, January/February 2002)], in the form of that wonderful candidate that has evolved from superstring theory into what is now called "M Theory". The other fundamental theory is the initial condition of the Universe near the beginning of its expansion, some ten billion years ago. That may also be simple. From http://sun3.lib.uci.edu/~jsisson/artists.htm#helmut: Helmut Karl Wimmer was the Art Supervisor of the American Museum-Hayden Planetarium. His works have appeared in many planetariums, museums, and scores of publications. Wimmer was born in Munich, Germany, in 1925, and was apprenticed at the age of fourteen to train as a sculptor and architectural model maker. At eighteen he was in the army and served with the Alpine troops. At the end of World War II, Wimmer was captured by Czech partisans and turned over to the Russians as a prisoner of war. In 1949, Wimmer was released and returned to Munich where he found work as a sculptor. In 1954, he decided to emigrate to the United States. Once in New York, a chance recommendation led him to an opening in the Art Department of the Hayden Planetarium. Besides illustrating planetarium shows, his works have been seen in numerous publications, including, Natural History, Smithsonian, Reader's Digest, and The New York Times. He is best known for his paintings for a series of astronomy books for young people by Dr. Franklin M. Branley, published by T.Y. Crowell."(from Space Art.
